Assistant Professor, High Performance Building

The School of Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position in High Performance Building to be hired at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 1st, 2023, or on a mutually agreed date thereafter.

The High Performance Building Lab (HPBL) seeks a new faculty member that is committed to advanced design research that profoundly influences the built environment to become more efficient, resilient, and equitable. The threat of climate change calls for novel frameworks of sustainable design and building analytics. That is why this position’s research and pedagogical motivations are open to multiple interpretations, including (but not limited to) focusing on energy, materiality, indoor environments, building systems and occupant experiences. Scholarship contributions can also vary in scale, including architectural components, buildings, neighborhoods, cities, and regional / planetary investigations in existing and new constructions.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in design programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels, including mentorship of Ph.D. and post-doc scholars. The position emphasizes research-focused graduate work and teaching in architecture and design. The faculty candidate is expected to participate in the intellectual life of Georgia Tech, and to develop transdisciplinary research collaborations and pedagogical initiatives with other units across the institute. This may also include engagement with Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs) such as SEI, IPaT, and BBISS, among others. Faculty responsibilities include leading original research and/or contributions to professional practice, teaching and advising students, as well as serving the school, college, the institute, and the public at large.



Successful candidates must have earned a doctorate degree in architecture or a closely related field by the start of the appointment, with a record of scholarly achievement that qualifies for a tenure-track position. The successful candidate will have a record of scholarship or practice and be able to contribute to the teaching mission of the school. Additionally, the school expects the candidate to be qualified to:

  • Develop and lead a research agenda in the field of high performance building.
  • Teach core curriculum environmental systems courses as well as specialized electives.
  • Mentor graduate research at the Master of Science and Ph.D. levels.
  • Provide service to the public and the profession.

High Performance Building Lab (HPBL)

The HPBL’s goal is to disruptively transform design analysis of existing and new energy flows, in and in-between buildings. We operate at the scale of architecture, urban design, and planning practices through applied research, and by developing sustainable design workflows and metrics. The HPBL attracts qualified students with a background in architecture, design, and technology, and/or engineering. The focus is on the development and application of advanced design technology for the built environment. The HPBL has been previously funded by federal agencies such as the US DOE, ARPA-E, and the NSF, as well as the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation and New America.

The HPBL contributes to pedagogy by intersecting design, technology, and climate change-focused courses and studios. The lab mentored the 2022 Design Challenge Residential Division Grand Winner team that competed in the DOE’s Solar Decathlon, as well as a design studio that competed against 400+ submissions in the AIA and ACSA’s 2019 International Design Competition: Here+Now, and we won 1st Place and an Honorable Mention (2/6 total awards). Furthermore, the lab coalesces service with scholarship, and hosted the Symposium on Simulation for Architecture and Urban Design’s (SimAUD) 10-year anniversary in 2019. We aim to continuously contribute to the rigorous exploration of sustainability in architecture and inventing the next state of the art in building technology.


School of Architecture

The School of Architecture has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty, along with a strong contingent of Professors of Practice and adjunct professors drawn from the practice community, outstanding students, and a large and supportive alumni base. The school is the largest of five schools within the College of Design. It offers a B.S. in Architecture, a professional Master of Architecture, a Ph.D. in Architecture, and several specialized M.S. degrees.
