Nimbus, a Sculpture by Tristan Al-Haddad, is Constructed in Downtown Minneapolis

Tristan Al-Haddad, part-time lecturer for the School of Architecture, is currently constructing a piece of weathering steel titled Nimbus in Minneapolis, MN across the street from the Central Library. Commissioned by the City of Minneapolis as an extension of the redesign of the Nicolett Mall, Nimbus was inspired by halos of light and by art featuring elegant poses signifying levitation and stillness. Despite its steel structure, Nimbus seemingly defies gravity.

“The piece is both derivative of the extrinsic site forces and projective of its own intrinsic desires. It is derivative in the way in which it serves as a knuckle between the primary axis of Nicolett Street and the Atrium of the Central Library,” according to Formation Studio’s description of the sculpture. “In terms of the intrinsic desires, the piece aspires to create a visceral experience of light, form, and phenomena.”
