Equity in Architecture Installation Wins AIA Georgia Student Project Award

“The Veil,” a structure and installation designed by members of the Georgia Tech Equity in Architecture student organization, has reached another milestone since its initiation in the spring semester of 2017—recognition as a winning student project in the 2020 AIA Georgia Design Awards.

This project began when a group of Master of Architecture students from the Equity in Architecture (formerly Women in Architecture) organization got together to take an independent study course, which included a requirement to design a submission for the Art on the BeltLine program, an opportunity for temporary exhibitions along the Atlanta BeltLine. The group that led the charge on designing and fabrication the Veil were Rebecca Churio (M.Arch ’18), Bailey Rummler (M.Arch ’18), Emily Wirt (M.Arch ’19), and Stephanie Wright (M.Arch ’19).

The Veil, made entirely of aluminum and fabricated on campus in the School of Architecture’s Digital Fabrication Lab, is a sculptural structure that serves as a pavilion and symbolizes Equity in Architecture’s mission to “Inspire, Empower, Celebrate.”

“The cables themselves are this intertwining canopy — that’s the veil,” Emily Wirt (Master of Architecture ’19) and former president of Equity in Architecture told the Technique. “The idea that these cables are this continuous spectrum, wrapping around and holding up this structure, so that it almost feels like it’s floating above the ground [creates] this veil, with the delicacy yet the weight of the aluminum. Ultimately, it’s this supportive veil type community,” she said.

The Veil sat along the BeltLine from December of 2017 through June of 2018, and then moved to its permanent home in October of 2018 on Georgia Tech’s campus, located near the Love Manufacturing Building.
