Letter to Congressman John Lewis by Isra Hassan

Dear Congressman John Lewis,

I had the pleasure of meeting you several times, and I recall shaking your hand and talking to you about current issues and Atlanta. Nothing can compare to the overwhelming emotion I felt to have marched with you to the Georgia State Capitol. I will never forget that day.

I helped hold up a large banner with "Georgia's 5th District” written in purple.  I didn't know the people I was helping hold the flag as I had just met them that morning. However, we were all there to march for a common cause. As I stood holding this banner, I heard some commotion behind me. I turned around and still had no idea what was going on. Then, I saw people turning around and moving off to the sidelines.

Still unsure of what was happening, I heard someone shout, “Make way for the congressman!” Yet I was still oblivious. My eyes weren't really focused on the right thing, and I had no idea what was coming my way.

It happened so quickly and suddenly you emerged from the crowd. You made it a point to shake everyone's hand. When you reached out and put your hand on my shoulder, I immediately began to fill up with deep, uncontrollable emotion and to beam with pride. It was surreal. You looked at the banner and said, “Come on. Let's march!”

You escorted my new friends and me to the front of the crowd, and I, alongside so many people, marched behind you. I began to weep. I couldn't help but cry as we walked down Auburn avenue passing the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The symbolism alone was powerful, but your spirit was so strong. One cannot deny your influence on us, and the continued fight you have for injustice.

So, I will continue your fight. You inspired me to get my Master of Public Policy, so that I, too, can fight these wrongs through changing the policies that empower them. I will always fight for equity and racial justice through my words, my right to vote, and my education. You influenced me to cause some “good trouble.” Thank you, Congressman John Lewis.

With Peace & Love,

Isra Hassan
