João V. Navarrete de Almeida

João V. Navarrete de Almeida is a Ph.D. student at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a licensed architect in Brazil. His research focuses on regionalism, construction, structural systems, and environmental design in nineteenth century and modern architecture across the Americas, with a particular emphasis on South American late modernism. His work has been published by DOCOMOMO Brasil, SESAH, and Park Books (Zurich, London), and he currently serves as Director of Media for the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA). His research investigates the design and construction strategies behind buildings of exceptional quality, with a special interest in architecture that minimizes environmental impact. At Georgia Tech, João has served as a teaching assistant for History and Theory of Architecture I and II, as well as for Design Studio courses. As a licensed architect, he has worked on institutional, landscape, urban, commercial, and educational projects of various scales for both public and private sectors in Brazil.
Before beginning his doctoral studies, João earned a master's degree in architecture and urbanism from Mackenzie Presbyterian University (2022), supported by an Academic Excellence Program scholarship awarded by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture and urbanism from Escola da Cidade (2020), which included a year of study at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (2015–16). He has worked at several architecture firms, including SPOL, Triptyque Architecture, Apiacás Arquitetos, Königsberger Vannucchi, and Lucio Fleury Arquitetura. In 2020, he was part of the team awarded second prize in the national design competition for the new SESC Aracaju theater in Northeast Brazil.
