Biography

Michael Stradley is a designer and educator interested in the transformative, disruptive, and sometimes surprising potential of emerging and defunct technology. An architect by training, Stradley pursues methods of design research which cut across a range of scales, and borrow processes and knowledge from architecture-adjacent disciplines. Recent projects include oil paintings executed by CNC-machine; a book of computer-generated, imaginary brushstrokes; an annually-editioned, absurdist material encyclopedia; and an exploration of architectural color theory in the context of computational design.

Stradley has taught architecture and design at a number of educational institutions including Bennington College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Outside of Stradley’s solo creative practice and teaching practice, he has worked collaboratively with a range of architects and artists to help realize their work. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Science in Architectural Studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Stradley will serve as the Ventulett NEXT Fellow at Georgia Tech beginning fall 2024.

Statement of Teaching Interest

Stradley’s teaching focuses on drawing and representation, computation, and fabrication as drivers of design. Recent coursework at Georgia Tech includes graduate and undergraduate design studios, an elective on non-representational drawing, and courses in digital representation and modeling.

Statement of Research Interest

Stradley’s creative work and research investigates expanded practices of drawing. Recent works include non-representational, machine-drawn ink fields, which examine the meeting of computational procedure and material behavior. His work often borrows methods and approaches from fine-art disciplines like printmaking, painting, bookwork, and installation.
