Advanced Production

The Advanced Production concentration of the Master of Science in Architecture focuses on integrating advanced design, computation, and manufacturing technologies into workflows for the production of experimental spatial systems, material assemblies, and buildings. Coursework for this concentration incorporates emerging design technologies including robotics and automation, Augmented Reality (AR) / Virtual Reality (VR), Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS; aka “Drones”), additive manufacturing (3d-printing), subtractive computer numerical control (CNC) manufacturing processes, parametric modeling and production logistics.

Graduates from this program will be prepared to leverage expertise in advanced digital design and production as consultants to or embedded within progressive architectural firms, digital manufacturing operations, and advanced technology start-ups. Additionally, this concentration positions graduates to further pursue research through academic faculty positions or as potential Ph.D. candidates.

Diverse research endeavors pursued by the Advanced Production faculty directly charge the core curriculum into a richly interwoven sequence of courses, the combined content of which seamlessly spans from foundational development to far-reaching experimentation. Additionally, participants can further fine-tune their lines of study through a wide range of elective courses offered within the College of Design and other schools throughout Georgia Institute of Technology.

A primary ambition for everyone involved with the Advanced Production concentration is to cultivate an operational mindset that intertwines design acuity, technical experimentation, and collaborative ingenuity into new questions, ideas, research trajectories, material techniques, and spatial demonstrations. Much of this work will be developed in the Digital Fabrication Lab, a stellar facility that provides 13,000 square feet of fabrication space and a full array of industrial-grade CNC, robotic, welding, and traditional shop equipment.
